Monday, August 17, 2026 - Anthony Hopkins has revealed the terrifying moment behind his decision to stop drinking, recalling how an alcohol-fuelled blackout left him facing the possibility that he could have killed an entire family.
Speaking in a new interview, the 88-year-old Oscar winner said he was driving to a party on December 27, 1975, when he realised how dangerous his drinking had become. “I realised I could have taken out a whole family by my driving,” Hopkins said, describing the incident as the moment he knew he needed help.
The actor then contacted Alcoholics Anonymous after receiving a phone number from someone who had previously offered help. Hopkins recalled telling an elderly woman at his first meeting that he knew he was “in big trouble” but did not know what to do. He says the experience changed everything, with his craving for alcohol disappearing after that encounter.
Hopkins has now remained sober for more than 50 years and has repeatedly used his story to encourage people struggling with addiction to seek help rather than continue putting their lives and others at risk.
Hopkins has also been candid about the darker consequences of his drinking in his memoir, We Did OK, Kid, describing how alcohol affected his relationships, work and behaviour.
Today, the actor is marking his remarkable sobriety while embracing another passion: music. He is promoting his debut album, Life Is a Dream, which brings together compositions he has written over several decades. For Hopkins, the message from his darkest period remains urgent—asking for help can be the moment that changes everything.
