Saturday, August 22, 2026 - Seven people, including two police officers, have been killed in a devastating crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough in northeast England.
The collision happened at around 3:39 a.m. on Saturday when a Volkswagen Passat travelling in the wrong direction collided head-on with a marked Cleveland Police vehicle. All seven people in the two vehicles died at the scene.
The two officers have been identified as PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38.
Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller paid tribute to the officers, saying they were serving their community when they failed to return home to their families. The five people travelling in the Passat have also been identified, with police contacting their relatives.
The crash is now the subject of an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Authorities said a police pursuit had begun after officers spotted a suspicious vehicle before it travelled onto the A66 and became involved in the fatal collision.
Investigators are working to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the crash, while officials have urged the public not to speculate as the inquiry continues.
