Uganda closes Congo border over Ebola outbreak fears

Saturday, June 6, 2026- Uganda has moved to temporarily close key border crossings with the Democratic Republic of the Congo following rising concerns over a potential Ebola outbreak in the region.

The decision comes amid heightened surveillance reports indicating suspected cases near cross-border trading routes, prompting urgent containment measures aimed at reducing the risk of transmission.

Authorities say the closure targets high-traffic entry points where daily movement between communities is intense, particularly among traders and transport workers.

Health screening measures have been intensified on both sides of the border, with emergency response teams deployed to monitor travelers, enforce quarantine protocols, and improve early detection capacity.

The move reflects growing concern that delayed containment could allow the virus to spread rapidly across regional trade corridors.

Public health officials are now focusing on strengthening coordination with international health partners to contain the threat before it escalates further.

While the border restriction is expected to disrupt commerce and local movement in the short term, officials argue that preventing a wider outbreak remains the priority.

The situation remains under close watch as surveillance systems are reinforced and testing capacity is scaled up across affected districts.
