Sri Lanka nursing home worker says a 'chained' patient was among 13 fire victims

Friday, June 5, 2026- A devastating fire at a nursing home in Sri Lanka has left 13 people dead, with a staff member alleging that one of the victims was a patient who had been “chained” at the time of the blaze.

The claim has intensified public outrage and raised urgent questions about safety standards, oversight, and the treatment of vulnerable residents in long-term care facilities. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and the conditions inside the facility.

Emergency responders were deployed to the scene as flames rapidly engulfed parts of the building, but many residents were unable to escape in time. Survivors and staff describe chaotic evacuation efforts, with limited resources and structural barriers complicating rescue operations.

The allegation that a patient was physically restrained has added a deeply troubling dimension to the tragedy, prompting scrutiny of whether proper safeguarding protocols were in place.

Government officials have pledged a full inquiry into both the fire’s origin and the management practices at the nursing home.

Human rights advocates are calling for stricter regulation of elder care institutions, including mandatory inspections and enforcement of fire safety standards.

As families mourn the victims, pressure is mounting for accountability and systemic reform to prevent similar disasters in the future.
