One dead and two missing in missile strike on tanker near Oman

Wednesday, June 10, 2026- A missile strike on a commercial tanker near the coast of Oman has killed one crew member and left two others missing, according to maritime authorities and international reports.

The incident occurred off Sohar in the Gulf of Oman, about 20 nautical miles northeast of the port, where the Palau-flagged tanker Settebello sent a distress call reporting a strike to its engine room and a serious fire onboard. Local authorities and the Omani Navy responded to assist with evacuation and ongoing rescue efforts.

The tanker was carrying a multinational crew, with many seafarers reported to be Indian nationals, and 21 crew members have been rescued so far, according to India’s foreign ministry.

Three Indian seafarers remain missing as authorities continue search and rescue operations with support from the Indian embassy in Muscat and Omani officials. New Delhi has condemned the attack and stressed its close coordination with local partners to locate the missing crew members.

Maritime security analysts suggest the strike may be linked to heightened regional military operations, including enforcement of blockades and confrontations involving U.S. forces aiming to restrict shipping associated with Iran following restrictions through the Strait of Hormuz.

Investigators have not yet confirmed who launched the missile, and U.S. Central Command has not commented publicly on the exact cause of the attack at this stage. The situation has stoked concerns about maritime safety and geopolitical tensions in a key global energy transit route.
