FIFA to allow factory-sealed, disposable water bottles into World Cup stadiums

Friday, June 5, 2026- FIFA reverses parts of water-bottle policy after fan backlash — Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the U.S. and Canada, the world football governing body has modified its stadium rules to allow spectators to bring one factory-sealed, soft-plastic disposable water bottle (about 20 oz/590 ml) into matches.

The updated guidance applies to all matches in the United States and Canada and comes after earlier announcements drew widespread criticism from fans and health experts, who warned of severe heat risks inside venues.

Reusable bottles still banned over safety concerns FIFA’s current policy still prohibits hard-sided, reusable water bottles and other containers, citing security and safety risks including the potential for objects to be used as projectiles inside stadiums.

The governing body says this is necessary to protect players, fans, and officials, even as temperatures in some host cities are expected to exceed 25 °C (77 °F) during the tournament.

Health and convenience remain priorities in debate. The initial ban on all outside containers sparked strong pushback from supporters and public figures who argued that hydration is critical in potentially extreme heat.

With the latest change, fans can at least bring a sealed water bottle, though critics note this still limits eco-friendly options and may encourage higher concession prices within stadiums.
