Friday, June 5, 2026-A former senior official with the Central Intelligence Agency is facing serious federal charges after investigators allege he orchestrated one of the most audacious internal thefts in recent memory.
According to multiple reports, including The Washington Post, the official — identified as David J. Rush — allegedly fabricated a highly classified “black box” spy program as a pretext to funnel millions in government funds into purchasing gold bars for his own use.
Authorities say federal investigators uncovered 303 gold bars worth roughly $40 million, along with about $2 million in U.S. currency and more than 30 luxury watches, during an FBI search of Rush’s Virginia home.
Prosecutors allege Rush repeatedly requested and received large quantities of gold and foreign currency under the pretense that the assets were needed for covert “work-related expenses,” then diverted them outside official channels.
At a recent detention hearing, a federal judge ordered Rush to remain in custody pending trial, calling him a significant flight risk due to his background and access to resources. Prosecutors described him as a “master manipulator,” and court filings reveal alleged falsehoods in his claimed military and educational history.
Rush currently faces a charge tied to theft of public funds, and the investigation continues as authorities piece together the full scope of the alleged scheme.
