Turkish court suspends opposition CHP leadership

Friday, May 22, 2026-Turkey’s political tensions escalated dramatically after a court suspended the leadership of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), triggering outrage across the country and deepening concerns over democracy and judicial independence.

The ruling overturned the CHP’s 2023 leadership election, removing party leader Özgür Özel and reinstating former chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu as interim leader. Opposition figures immediately described the decision as a politically motivated attempt to weaken President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s biggest challengers ahead of future elections.

The crisis comes at a dangerous moment for Turkey’s opposition movement. The CHP had gained significant momentum after defeating Erdoğan’s AK Party in major local elections and positioning jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu as a potential future presidential candidate.

Analysts say the court decision could destabilize the opposition alliance, spark larger street protests, and increase political uncertainty across the country. Financial markets reacted immediately, with Turkish stocks falling sharply and renewed pressure hitting the Turkish lira as investors feared growing instability.

CHP leaders have vowed to fight the ruling through higher courts while supporters continue gathering outside party headquarters in Ankara. Critics argue the judiciary is increasingly being used to target opposition figures, while government officials insist the courts are acting independently.

With tensions rising, the outcome of this legal battle could reshape Turkey’s political future and determine whether the opposition can remain united against Erdoğan’s long-standing grip on power.
