TRUMP's $1.776B fund gets bipartisan pushback from LI delegation

Wednesday, May 27, 2026- A growing number of politicians in Germany are openly supporting calls first pushed by Donald Trump to reduce or remove American troops stationed across the country.

Several lawmakers argue that Europe’s largest economy should take greater responsibility for its own defense instead of depending heavily on U.S. military protection decades after the Cold War. The renewed debate comes at a sensitive moment as NATO members face increasing pressure to boost defense spending while global tensions continue to rise.

German officials backing the proposal say the continued presence of thousands of U.S. troops has become politically and economically difficult to justify. Some leaders believe Berlin should focus on building an independent European security strategy rather than relying on Washington’s military umbrella.

Others argue that shifting U.S. forces elsewhere could allow America to prioritize growing security challenges in Asia and the Middle East. Critics, however, warn that a major troop withdrawal could weaken NATO unity and send the wrong message to rivals such as Russia during a period of heightened geopolitical instability.

The issue is quickly gaining momentum ahead of major political and defense discussions expected across Europe later this year. Analysts say the debate reflects broader changes in transatlantic relations as both American and European leaders reassess long-standing military commitments and spending priorities.

While no final decision has been announced, the growing bipartisan discussion in Germany signals that the future of the U.S. military presence in Europe may soon become one of the most closely watched global security issues.
