Taipei warns of China 'maneuvering' ahead of TRUMP-XI summit

Thursday, May 7, 2026- Taiwan is raising fresh concerns that China may attempt political “maneuvering” on the Taiwan issue ahead of the upcoming Trump–Xi summit in Beijing. Senior officials in Taipei say Beijing is likely to intensify diplomatic pressure and strategic messaging as it seeks to shape the agenda of talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The warning comes as both global powers prepare for high-stakes discussions covering trade, security, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Taiwanese intelligence officials argue that China views the summit as an opportunity to push for shifts in U.S. language and policy on Taiwan, even if subtle. Beijing has repeatedly described Taiwan as its core interest and has urged Washington to avoid actions it sees as supporting “separatism.”

Analysts note that in the lead-up to such summits, China often increases both diplomatic signaling and military activity in the region to strengthen its negotiating position, adding pressure on Taipei and Washington simultaneously.

Despite these concerns, U.S. officials continue to reiterate that Washington’s Taiwan policy remains unchanged, maintaining support for Taiwan’s self-defense while avoiding formal diplomatic recognition.

However, Taipei fears that the transactional nature of global diplomacy could still leave room for bargaining over sensitive issues. As the Trump–Xi meeting approaches, Taiwan is closely watching for any sign that its security could become part of broader geopolitical negotiations—making the coming days especially tense across the Taiwan Strait.
