Settlers force exhumation of Palestinian man from West Bank grave, family says

Sunday, May 10, 2026- A Palestinian family in the occupied West Bank says Israeli settlers forced them to exhume the body of a recently buried relative from his grave near Jenin, in a deeply disturbing incident that has triggered widespread condemnation.

The man, an elderly resident who had died of natural causes, was buried shortly after receiving Israeli military coordination and permits. However, shortly after the funeral, settlers reportedly arrived at the cemetery and demanded the grave be opened, claiming the land belonged to a nearby settlement.

According to the family, the situation escalated quickly as settlers threatened to use heavy machinery to dig up the grave themselves, leaving relatives with no real option but to comply. The body was then removed and reburied in another location.

Israeli soldiers were reportedly present during the confrontation, later saying they intervened by confiscating tools and trying to prevent further clashes, though they did not directly order the family to exhume the remains.

The incident has drawn strong international attention, with human rights officials calling it a disturbing example of rising tensions and settler-related violence in the West Bank. It also comes amid broader concerns about growing instability in the region, where disputes over land, settlements, and civilian safety continue to intensify.

For many observers, the episode underscores how quickly local disputes can escalate into actions that deeply impact even the most basic human dignity, including burial rights.
