Tuesday, May 26, 2026- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sent an official message of condolence to Chinese President Xi Jinping following the deadly coal mine explosion in China’s Shanxi province that killed at least 82 people.

In the message released by North Korean state media, Kim expressed “deep sympathy” to the victims’ families and said he hoped the injured would recover quickly after one of China’s worst industrial disasters in recent years.

The rare public gesture highlights the continued strategic relationship between Pyongyang and Beijing at a time when both countries face growing international pressure and geopolitical tensions with the West.

China remains North Korea’s most important economic and diplomatic ally, and analysts say messages of solidarity between the two leaders are closely watched for signs of political coordination and regional alignment. The Shanxi explosion has already triggered nationwide safety inspections across China’s mining sector after authorities revealed possible safety failures at the site.

Chinese rescue teams completed recovery operations over the weekend while investigators continued examining what caused the catastrophic blast. President Xi Jinping ordered a full investigation and demanded stronger industrial safety enforcement nationwide following public outrage over the disaster.

Kim’s message is expected to reinforce diplomatic ties between the neighboring governments as both continue navigating growing economic and security challenges across the region.
