Tuesday, May 26, 2026- Ukraine’s capital Kyiv has come under one of the heaviest Russian aerial assaults of the war, with waves of missiles and drones striking residential districts, infrastructure sites, and government areas across the city.
Ukrainian officials said Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles overnight, including the hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile, causing fires, widespread destruction, and mounting civilian casualties. At least four people were killed and nearly 100 injured as emergency crews searched damaged apartment buildings and burning structures throughout the capital.
Residents spent hours sheltering in subway stations and underground bunkers while explosions echoed across Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as deliberate terror against civilians and warned that Russia may be preparing even larger attacks in the coming days.
Russian officials claimed the bombardment was retaliation for a Ukrainian strike in Russian-occupied territory, though Kyiv denies intentionally targeting civilians. Moscow has also warned foreign diplomats and citizens to leave the Ukrainian capital ahead of what it described as “systematic strikes.”
The attacks have triggered sharp international condemnation, with the United Nations and several European governments accusing Moscow of escalating the conflict dangerously. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said he was “deeply concerned” by Russia’s public threats toward Kyiv and warned of worsening civilian suffering if the violence continues.
European nations have summoned Russian diplomats in protest while NATO members monitor the situation closely as fears grow over further escalation in the region.
