Italy’s foreign minister says divers found bodies of 4 Italians in Maldives sea cave

Tuesday, May 19, 2026-Italy’s foreign minister has confirmed that divers have recovered the bodies of four Italian nationals in a sea cave off the coast of the Maldives, following an underwater incident that prompted a large-scale search and rescue operation.

The victims were reportedly part of a diving excursion when they became trapped in a submerged cave system, triggering emergency response efforts from local authorities and international rescue teams.

The incident occurred in the Maldives, a country known for its deep-water dive sites and complex underwater terrain that can pose serious risks even to experienced divers.

According to preliminary accounts, challenging currents and limited visibility may have contributed to the tragedy, though officials have not yet released a final determination on the cause. Recovery teams worked for days to locate and retrieve the victims amid difficult underwater conditions.

Italian authorities are now coordinating with Maldivian officials to repatriate the bodies and support the affected families.

The tragedy has raised renewed concerns about diving safety protocols in high-risk tourist areas, with experts calling for stricter enforcement of guide requirements and emergency preparedness standards. Investigations are expected to continue as both countries review what led to the fatal excursion.
