Israeli forces raid West Bank towns, fire tear gas causing suffocation

Friday, May 22, 2026-Israeli forces conducted overnight raids across several towns in the occupied West Bank, with local reports saying tear gas was fired during confrontations that left multiple residents suffering from suffocation.

The operations targeted areas including residential neighborhoods, where security forces carried out arrests and searches linked to ongoing counterterrorism efforts. Palestinian health officials reported that several civilians, including young people, were treated for respiratory distress after heavy use of tear gas in densely populated areas.

The raids are part of a broader and increasingly frequent cycle of military operations in the West Bank, where Israeli authorities say actions are aimed at dismantling militant networks and preventing attacks.

However, Palestinian officials and rights groups argue that the operations often lead to widespread civilian disruption, property damage, and rising humanitarian pressure on local communities already dealing with economic and mobility restrictions.

The situation continues to fuel volatility across the region, with tensions in the West Bank running parallel to the broader Israel-Gaza conflict. Analysts warn that repeated raids, mass arrests, and frequent clashes risk further destabilizing an already fragile security environment.

As both sides remain entrenched, international calls for de-escalation are growing, but conditions on the ground show little sign of easing.
