Gov. SHERRILL demands access to ICE facility as hunger strike widens

Wednesday, May 27, 2026-Mikie Sherrill is demanding immediate access to a federal immigration detention facility as a widening hunger strike among detainees raises urgent concerns over conditions, oversight, and medical safety.

The push comes amid growing pressure from advocacy groups and local officials who say transparency inside Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities is essential as reports emerge of deteriorating health among participants in the protest.

The hunger strike, which has expanded in recent days, involves detainees calling for improved treatment, faster case reviews, and better access to legal and medical services.

Supporters argue the situation is escalating quickly and requires direct intervention, while federal officials maintain that security protocols and existing oversight procedures are being followed. The standoff has intensified political debate over immigration detention practices and the level of access granted to elected officials.

As tensions rise, lawmakers and human rights groups are urging a swift resolution to prevent further health risks among those involved. The incident has become a flashpoint in the broader national debate over immigration enforcement and detention conditions, with calls increasing for independent inspections and emergency monitoring.

With pressure mounting on both federal authorities and state representatives, the situation is expected to remain highly volatile in the coming days.
