Cloudflare is laying off 1,100 employees to prepare for 'the agentic AI era'

Friday, May 8, 2026- Cloudflare has announced a major restructuring that will see more than 1,100 employees laid off as the company pivots toward what it calls the “agentic AI era.”

The decision comes even as the company reports strong revenue growth and better-than-expected earnings, underscoring how aggressively tech firms are reshaping operations around artificial intelligence. Leadership says internal AI usage has surged dramatically in recent months, fundamentally changing how work is performed across engineering, HR, finance, and marketing teams.

According to internal communications, the company’s AI adoption has increased more than 600% in just three months, with thousands of AI-driven workflows now running daily across the organization.

Cloudflare argues the layoffs are not driven by cost-cutting or performance issues, but by a structural shift in how the company operates. The goal, executives say, is to redesign the workforce around automation and AI agents that can handle tasks previously done by large teams of employees.

The move has intensified broader concerns across the tech industry about job displacement as companies increasingly embed AI into core operations.

While Cloudflare maintains that it will continue hiring in key technical and customer-facing roles, the scale of the cuts signals a sharper transition than many expected. Investors and workers alike are now watching closely to see whether this “AI-first” strategy delivers long-term growth—or accelerates workforce instability across the sector.
