Bystander shot near White House in serious condition

Tuesday, May 26, 2026- A bystander caught in the crossfire during the shooting outside the White House remains in serious condition as investigators continue examining the deadly confrontation between Secret Service agents and gunman Nasire Best.

Authorities say the civilian was struck during the exchange of gunfire after Best opened fire near a security checkpoint close to the White House complex Saturday evening. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment and is currently listed in stable but serious condition.

Law enforcement officials have not yet confirmed whether the bystander was hit by bullets fired by the suspect or by returning fire from security personnel. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, ballistic evidence, and eyewitness accounts as part of a full federal inquiry into the incident.

Secret Service agents fatally shot 21-year-old Nasire Best after he allegedly approached the perimeter armed with a handgun and began firing toward officers guarding the area.

The incident has intensified security concerns around the White House and raised new questions about how heavily protected federal zones handle active shooter situations involving civilians nearby.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as tourists, journalists, and pedestrians scrambled for cover during the rapid burst of gunfire. Federal authorities, including the FBI and Secret Service, continue investigating the suspect’s background, motive, and prior interactions with law enforcement as the wounded bystander recovers under close medical supervision.
