Tuesday, May 12, 2026- The mayor of Arcadia, a city in Southern California, has been charged in federal court with acting as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government, according to U.S. prosecutors.
Authorities allege that Eileen Wang agreed to a plea deal in which she admitted to promoting pro-Beijing messaging through a website that was presented as a news platform but allegedly functioned as a propaganda outlet.
Federal filings say the activities in question took place between late 2020 and 2022, before and around the period of her political rise in local government.
Prosecutors claim she worked with individuals connected to Chinese officials to publish and distribute content aligned with Beijing’s positions, including material denying allegations of human rights abuses.
The case is part of a broader U.S. crackdown on alleged foreign influence operations targeting local and state-level officials.
Wang has since resigned from her position following the unsealing of the charges and is expected to formally enter a guilty plea in court proceedings. She faces a potential prison sentence if convicted.
Officials emphasize that the investigation centers on personal conduct and that no city resources were involved, but the case has intensified concerns in Washington over covert foreign influence in American political systems.
