World's oldest known tortoise, JONATHAN, still alive despite reports of death

Thursday, April 2, 2026-Jonathan, the world’s oldest known land animal, is still alive despite widespread reports claiming he had died. The false news spread rapidly online after a viral social media post alleged that the 190+ year-old tortoise had passed away, causing confusion and concern worldwide.

Authorities and Jonathan’s longtime veterinarian quickly debunked the claim, confirming that the tortoise is “very much alive.” Officials on the island of Saint Helena released recent updates and images to reassure the public. The viral post was later exposed as a hoax, reportedly linked to a cryptocurrency scam designed to exploit the emotional reaction to his supposed death.

Jonathan, estimated to be around 193–194 years old, continues to live at the governor’s residence on Saint Helena, where he has resided since the 19th century. Despite being blind and lacking a sense of smell, he remains active, feeding well and maintaining his routine—proving once again that reports of his death were greatly exaggerated.
