US intelligence assesses Iran maintains significant missile launching capability, sources say

Friday, April 3, 2026-U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that Iran continues to retain a significant missile‑launching capability despite more than five weeks of sustained strikes by U.S. and allied forces.

Roughly half of Iran’s missile launchers remain intact, and thousands of one‑way attack drones still form part of its arsenal. This persistence comes even as daily U.S. and Israeli airstrikes have targeted thousands of military sites in an effort to degrade Tehran’s offensive power.

Many of Iran’s remaining launchers and weapons systems may be inaccessible rather than destroyed, often hidden in underground tunnel networks that have proven difficult to locate and target.

A large proportion of Iran’s coastal defense cruise missiles also appear to still be functional, preserving Tehran’s ability to threaten shipping, especially in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

This intelligence paints a more complex and resilient picture of Iran’s military strength than some public statements by U.S. leaders have suggested.

While the total number of missiles launched by Iran has reportedly dropped sharply in recent weeks, officials warn that Tehran’s retained missile and drone capabilities mean it remains poised to strike and affect regional security, challenging narratives that the conflict is nearing a decisive conclusion.
