Friday, April 10, 2026-The United Kingdom and Norway have successfully disrupted what officials describe as a covert Russian operation aimed at surveying critical undersea cables in the North Atlantic.
The multi-week mission involved tracking a Russian attack submarine alongside two specialized deep-sea vessels believed to be capable of spying on—or potentially sabotaging—vital underwater infrastructure.
According to defense officials, the operation deployed a Royal Navy warship, surveillance aircraft, and hundreds of personnel to monitor the submarines as they operated within sensitive maritime zones.
The vessels were ultimately deterred and withdrew without causing any damage, but authorities say the intent appeared to involve mapping key communication and energy beneath the ocean floor.
The incident has heightened concerns across NATO about the vulnerability of undersea cables, which carry the vast majority of global internet and financial data.
