Monday, April 27, 2026-A man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of two University of South Florida doctoral students after a case that began as a missing persons investigation escalated into a major criminal probe.
Authorities identified the suspect as 26-year-old Hisham Abugharbieh, the roommate of victim Zamil Limon. Investigators say Limon’s remains were discovered on the Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa Bay, while his partner Nahida Bristy, also a doctoral student, remains missing but is presumed dead based on evidence presented to prosecutors.
Law enforcement officials say Abugharbieh was arrested following a SWAT operation at a Tampa residence after a tense standoff. He now faces multiple charges including premeditated murder, evidence tampering, and false imprisonment, as investigators continue working to determine the full sequence of events.
The case has sent shockwaves through the USF community, with officials describing the incident as deeply disturbing. Investigators say there is currently no evidence of additional suspects, while court proceedings are expected to move forward as the investigation continues.
