PETER MAGYAR vows to pursue those who ‘plundered’ Hungary after election win

Tuesday, April 14, 2026-Hungary’s new leader Péter Magyar has vowed to investigate and hold accountable those he says “plundered” the country during years of entrenched political rule, following his landmark election victory that unseated longtime Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Speaking in his first major post-election remarks, Magyar said his government would prioritize transparency, anti-corruption measures, and institutional reform.

Magyar, who rose from within Orbán’s former political circle before breaking away, said the public mandate for change reflected deep frustration with governance and alleged misuse of public funds.

He pledged to launch wide-ranging reviews of state contracts, government-linked businesses, and public spending, arguing that accountability is necessary to restore trust in Hungary’s institutions and strengthen democratic oversight.

The transition marks a significant political shift in Hungary, where Orbán’s government had held power for more than a decade. As Magyar prepares to take office, he faces the challenge of balancing reform promises with economic stability and political unity in a divided landscape.

Supporters view his victory as a turning point, while critics warn of a turbulent period ahead as investigations and reforms begin.
