New Jersey warns of possible measles exposures at Newark Airport

Friday, April 24, 2026- New Jersey health officials have issued a warning after a possible measles exposure at Newark Liberty International Airport.

A person infected with measles traveled through the airport while contagious, potentially exposing travelers in specific terminals and during certain time periods. Officials are notifying individuals who may have been present and advising them to monitor for symptoms and ensure they are vaccinated.

The exposure alert is part of an investigation following the state’s first confirmed measles case of 2026. Health authorities say the infected individual was a non-resident who contracted the virus after international travel, and contact tracing is underway to identify others who may have been exposed.

Measles is extremely contagious and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that spreads across the body.

Health officials are urging anyone who may have been at the airport during the exposure period to check their vaccination status, watch for symptoms for up to 21 days, and contact a healthcare provider before visiting in person if symptoms develop.

There is currently no evidence of sustained community spread in New Jersey, but officials are treating the situation as a precautionary public health alert.
