Friday, April 3, 2026-A new COVID-19 variant known as “Cicada” is raising concern as it spreads increasingly among children, with early data showing higher infection rates in kids compared to previous strains.
Health experts say the variant—officially classified as BA.3.2—has been detected across multiple regions, including in wastewater samples in more than 25 states, signaling wider community transmission.
Evidence suggests children aged roughly 3 to 15 are being disproportionately affected, with some reports indicating they are significantly more likely to contract this variant than others.
Scientists note that the Cicada variant carries a high number of mutations, which may allow it to spread more easily and partially evade existing immunity from past infections or vaccination.
Despite this, current data shows that symptoms remain similar to earlier COVID-19 strains, including fever, cough, fatigue, sore throat, and congestion. Importantly, there is no clear indication so far that the variant causes more severe illness, though its rapid spread—especially among children—has put health authorities on alert.
