Malian army confirms clashes with armed fighters in key cities

Saturday, April 25, 2026- Mali’s military has confirmed intense clashes with armed groups in several key cities, marking a renewed surge in violence across the country’s central and northern regions.

The army says its forces engaged attackers in coordinated operations aimed at repelling assaults on security positions and restoring control in contested areas. The fighting reportedly involved heavy exchanges of gunfire and localized urban combat.

Military officials stated that the operations targeted armed factions linked to long-running insurgent activity in the Sahel, where state control remains fragile despite ongoing counterterrorism campaigns.

Reinforcements have been deployed to stabilize affected cities, with authorities stressing that efforts are underway to secure civilian areas and prevent further infiltration by militant groups.

The latest clashes underscore the persistent security crisis facing Mali, where armed groups continue to exploit rural and urban vulnerabilities.

Residents in affected regions have reported disruptions, including road closures and heightened military presence, as the army attempts to reassert authority and prevent the violence from spreading further into major population centers.
