Major 7.5-magnitude quake hits off Japan, triggers tsunami warnings

Wednesday, April 22, 2026-A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off Japan’s northeastern coast, triggering tsunami warnings and urgent evacuation orders across multiple coastal prefectures as authorities rushed to assess the impact.

The quake hit the Pacific offshore region near the Sanriku coast at a shallow depth, shaking large areas of northern Japan and prompting immediate alerts for possible tsunami waves of up to 3 meters. Officials warned residents in areas including Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido to move to higher ground and stay away from rivers and shorelines as precautionary measures.

Within an hour, tsunami waves were detected at coastal ports—though they were significantly smaller than feared, with reports showing surges of under one meter in some locations. Transportation was disrupted, including temporary suspension of bullet train services, while evacuation orders were issued for tens of thousands of residents as emergency systems activated across the region.

Authorities later downgraded some warnings to advisories after confirming limited wave impact, but officials stressed that aftershocks remain possible and urged continued vigilance.

While no major casualties or widespread damage were immediately reported, the event has once again highlighted Japan’s ongoing vulnerability as one of the world’s most seismically active regions.
