London police arrest 523 people at protest over Palestine Action ban

Saturday, April 11, 2026-London’s Metropolitan Police arrested 523 people during a mass protest in Trafalgar Square against the government’s ban on the activist group Palestine Action, marking one of the largest single-day arrest operations in recent UK history.

Authorities said those detained were accused of showing support for a “proscribed organisation,” an offense under anti-terror laws currently still in force despite ongoing legal challenges.

The demonstration drew hundreds of protesters, many holding placards and staging a peaceful sit-in to oppose the ban.

The protest comes at a tense moment, as a High Court previously ruled the ban unlawful, but the government has been allowed to appeal—leaving the legal status of the group in limbo. Police resumed arrests in recent weeks, warning in advance that any visible support for the group could lead to detention.

The mass arrests have sparked intense debate over civil liberties, with rights groups and activists arguing that the crackdown risks criminalizing peaceful protest.

Critics say the situation reflects a growing clash between national security laws and freedom of expression, while authorities maintain that enforcement is necessary under current legislation. As legal battles continue, the protest highlights deep divisions over how dissent is handled in the UK today.
