Wednesday, April 22, 2026-Iran has said it will not enter talks with the United States “for now,” dealing a fresh blow to Pakistan’s efforts to mediate a second round of negotiations aimed at easing the escalating conflict and extending a fragile ceasefire.
Tehran’s foreign ministry spokesperson said Iran had not made any decision to send a delegation to Pakistan, accusing Washington of undermining diplomacy through continued military pressure and what it described as violations of earlier ceasefire understandings. The comments effectively cast doubt on Islamabad’s plans to host multi-day discussions between the two sides in the coming days.
Pakistan has been positioning itself as a key intermediary, working to bring both sides back to the table after earlier talks ended without a breakthrough.
However, Iran’s refusal highlights the widening gap in expectations: the U.S. is pushing for rapid negotiations, while Tehran is demanding changes on the ground before any return to diplomacy. With tensions still high and trust deeply strained, the prospects for near-term talks remain uncertain despite ongoing mediation efforts.
