Friday, April 3, 2026-Iran executed a man convicted of participating in an attack on a restricted military facility during nationwide anti-government protests earlier this year.
The judiciary reported that Amirhossein Hatami admitted to entering the Tehran site, causing damage, setting fire to part of the facility, and attempting to seize weapons and ammunition. His appeal was rejected and the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence before the execution was carried out.
The execution is part of a broader crackdown by Iranian authorities on dissent linked to the January protests. Officials have been carrying out sentences for individuals convicted of attacks during the unrest, despite criticism from rights groups that trials have been unfair and confessions may have been obtained under duress.
Human rights advocates have expressed concern over the increasing use of the death penalty in protest-related cases. Several other protest detainees are reportedly at risk of execution, with critics warning that these measures aim to deter further dissent amid ongoing political and economic pressures in the country.
