Thursday, April 30, 2026-At least 29 people have been killed in a brutal attack in north-eastern Nigeria, where gunmen opened fire on a crowd gathered at a local football pitch.
The assault took place in Adamawa state, with witnesses saying the attackers stormed the area and began shooting indiscriminately at young people watching or playing football.
The attack appears to have been prolonged and highly destructive. Residents reported that the gunmen operated for hours, burning homes, places of worship, and vehicles while targeting civilians. Victims were largely youths, including spectators who had gathered for what should have been a routine community event.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri condemned the killings and pledged an immediate security crackdown, warning that those responsible would be pursued and punished.
This latest massacre underscores a rapidly worsening security crisis across northern Nigeria. Armed groups—including factions linked to extremist networks—continue to exploit weak security coverage in rural areas, carrying out coordinated and increasingly bold attacks.
With communities living under constant threat and confidence in protection eroding, the urgency for decisive action is growing. What happened on that football pitch is not an isolated tragedy—it is a stark signal that the violence is intensifying, and the stakes are rising fast.
