Thursday, April 30, 2026 - President Donald Trump has sparked fresh international controversy after resharing a social media post on Truth Social that depicted a map of the strategic Strait of Hormuz renamed as the “Strait of Trump.”
The post, shared on Wednesday, April 29, features the altered name prominently across the strategic waterway. While there is no indication of a formal attempt to rename the geographic feature, the move has been widely interpreted as a provocative signal amid the ongoing U.S. naval blockade of Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil
transit routes, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. It has
remained a flashpoint in the current conflict between Washington and Tehran,
particularly as the U.S. Navy continues to intercept tankers attempting to
export Iranian crude.
Trump had previously hinted at referring to the waterway
differently, though international maritime experts note that unilateral
renaming of international waters is largely symbolic and lacks standing under
diplomatic conventions.
Despite its symbolic nature, oil markets reacted to the news
on Thursday. Prices rose as traders assessed the potential for further
escalations and the continued uncertainty surrounding nuclear negotiations and
navigation rights in the region.
