Tuesday, April 14, 2026-The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is investigating allegations that U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell may have improperly employed a Brazilian nanny without valid work authorization—claims that were filed by a known conspiracy theorist.
The complaint, submitted by conservative filmmaker Joel Gilbert, alleges that Swalwell and his family hired a Brazilian national as a live-in caregiver and continued employing her after her visa authorization expired.
Federal authorities have not confirmed any wrongdoing, but DHS has opened a review after receiving the filing through immigration enforcement channels. Officials emphasize that an investigation does not imply guilt, and no charges have been filed.
The case has drawn attention because of the source of the allegation, with Gilbert widely described in reports as a conspiracy theorist with a history of politically motivated investigations.
The scrutiny comes amid broader controversy surrounding Swalwell, who is already facing separate and unrelated legal and political challenges, including misconduct allegations and calls for resignation.
