Wednesday, April 1, 2026-A shocking and surreal incident in Thailand has gone viral after a 48-year-old undertaker brought a coffin—containing a dead body—to a petrol station to prove he urgently needed fuel.
The man, identified as Preecha Ngernkasem, had initially been refused service when he tried to fill several jerrycans with diesel, as stations across the country enforce strict limits to prevent fuel hoarding amid an ongoing energy crisis.
Desperate to complete a scheduled cremation, Preecha returned to the station and opened the back of his vehicle, revealing the coffin to stunned staff. He explained that the fuel was not for resale, but for a funeral, as many crematoriums in Thailand rely on diesel-powered furnaces. The deceased, reportedly a homeless man, needed to be cremated quickly because there were no funds to store the body for long.
The unusual move worked. After seeing the coffin, the station manager allowed the fuel purchase, and the cremation was later carried out. The incident highlights the real-world consequences of fuel shortages linked to global tensions, which have triggered panic buying, rationing, and disruptions to essential services—even funerals.
