Boy, 9, rescued after being locked in his father’s van in France for over a year

Saturday, April 11, 2026-A 9-year-old boy has been rescued in eastern France after being confined inside his father’s van for more than a year, in a case that has shocked authorities and the public alike.

Police were alerted after a neighbor reported hearing “sounds of a child” coming from the parked vehicle, prompting an urgent response that led to the discovery.

When officers forced the van open, they found the child in extremely distressing conditions—malnourished, unable to walk, and lying in a fetal position surrounded by trash and human waste.

Investigators say the boy had been locked inside since late 2024, deprived of basic hygiene, movement, and proper care, before being rushed to hospital for urgent treatment.

The father has been arrested and is now facing serious charges including illegal confinement and child abuse, while his partner is also under investigation for failing to report the situation.

Authorities say the case has raised urgent concerns about hidden abuse and oversight failures, as people close to the family had been led to believe the child was elsewhere. The focus now shifts to the boy’s recovery and a deeper investigation into how the situation went undetected for so long.
