A mass shooting in Ukraine's capital leaves 6 dead before police shot and killed the gunman

Monday, April 20, 2026-A deadly mass shooting has shaken Kyiv after a gunman opened fire in a busy district, killing at least six people before being shot dead by police.

Ukrainian police say the attacker began shooting civilians in the street before storming a supermarket, where he took hostages and continued the assault. Authorities confirmed that multiple victims were killed both outside and inside the building, with others later dying from injuries in hospital.

The situation escalated rapidly as emergency units responded to the scene. The gunman, identified as a 58-year-old man born in Russia, barricaded himself inside the store, prompting a tense standoff.

Negotiations reportedly failed, forcing special forces to storm the location, where the suspect was ultimately killed. At least 14 people were injured, including a child, with several victims in critical condition as hospitals struggle to manage the aftermath.

Officials are now treating the attack as a possible act of terrorism, though the motive remains unclear. The incident has sparked outrage and urgent questions about how the attacker obtained a legal firearm and why the violence unfolded so quickly in a heavily populated area.

In a country already under strain from ongoing conflict, the shooting adds a new layer of shock, an internal act of violence that has left residents rattled and authorities under pressure to deliver answers fast.
