1 police officer killed, another wounded, in shooting at Chicago's Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, officials say

Monday, April 27, 2026- A Chicago police officer has been killed and another critically wounded after a shooting inside Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in a shocking incident that unfolded during a prisoner escort operation.

Authorities say the suspect, who was in custody and receiving medical attention, opened fire on the officers inside the hospital before fleeing briefly and later being captured.

The shooting happened in the morning as officers were transporting the suspect for observation before an intended transfer to jail. Officials say the suspect was checked for weapons on arrival but still managed to obtain a firearm during the encounter, triggering the deadly attack.

One officer, a 38-year-old veteran of the force, died from his injuries, while a second officer remains in critical condition.

The hospital was placed under lockdown as police secured the area, though officials confirmed no patients or staff were harmed. A weapon has been recovered and the suspect is in custody as investigators work to determine how the gun was brought into the facility and how the attack unfolded inside a secured medical setting.
