TRUMP says US considering 'winding down' war but other nations must guard Hormuz

Sunday, March 22, 2026-President Donald Trump said the United States is considering “winding down” its involvement in the escalating conflict with Iran, signaling a potential shift in strategy even as tensions in the region remain high.

Speaking amid ongoing hostilities, Trump indicated that while the U.S. may reduce its direct military role, responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz would increasingly fall to other nations. The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most critical transit chokepoints, with a significant portion of global oil supplies passing through it daily.

Trump emphasized that countries heavily reliant on Gulf energy exports—particularly in Europe and Asia—should take a more active role in protecting shipping lanes and energy infrastructure. He suggested that the U.S. has borne a disproportionate share of the burden in maintaining security in the region.

The comments come as global markets react nervously to recent attacks on Gulf energy facilities, with oil prices rising and shipping risks increasing. Analysts say any reduction in U.S. military presence could create a security vacuum unless quickly filled by allied forces.

Despite the talk of de-escalation, officials caution that no final decision has been made, and U.S. forces remain actively engaged. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further confrontation if attacks continue or diplomatic efforts fail to gain traction.
