TRUMP said he's pro legal immigration, his policies say otherwise

Monday, March 2, 2026-During his recent State of the Union address, President Donald Trump reiterated that he supports legal immigration and wants people to “come in legally,” saying the United States should welcome those who will contribute to the country.

However, fact-checkers say his actions over the past year tell a different story: several programs that provided legal pathways for immigrants have been ended or restricted, while legal immigration processes have been limited or paused.

Under Trump’s administration, officials have terminated temporary programs that allowed people to live and work legally in the U.S., reduced options for legal entry, and paused processing of many visa and permanent residency applications.

Immigrants pursuing legal status have also been caught up in broader enforcement actions, with some detained during routine check-ins and interviews. Critics argue these moves amount to significant restrictions on legal immigration opportunities, even as Trump asserts support for lawfully entering the country.

The contrast between rhetoric and policy has sparked broader debate about the direction of U.S. immigration policy. While the president frames himself as pro–legal immigration in speeches, analysts point to these policy changes as evidence that legal avenues to enter or remain in the United States have tightened considerably under his leadership.
