Nepal police arrest former prime minister and former home minister over September protest death

Monday, March 30, 2026-Nepal has plunged into a new wave of political tension after authorities arrested former prime minister K. P. Sharma Oli and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak over their alleged role in the deaths of protesters during last September’s uprising.

The arrests come as part of an ongoing homicide and negligence investigation tied to a violent crackdown that left at least 76 people dead and thousands injured during youth-led anti-corruption demonstrations.

Police moved in shortly after a new government took power, acting on the recommendations of an investigative panel that found both leaders potentially responsible for failing to prevent the bloodshed.

The protests, driven largely by younger citizens demanding accountability and reform, spiraled into nationwide unrest and ultimately forced Oli from office. Authorities insist the arrests are a step toward justice, not political revenge, signaling a sharp shift in how Nepal is handling high-level accountability.

The situation remains volatile, with supporters of the former leadership taking to the streets in protest and clashing with police.

As tensions rise, the arrests mark a defining moment in Nepal’s political reset—one where even the country’s most powerful figures are being called to answer for past actions. With public pressure mounting and legal proceedings ahead, the case is expected to shape the nation’s political direction in the weeks to come.
