Man accused in Gilgo Beach serial killings is expected to plead guilty, sources say

Saturday, March 28, 2026-The suspect in one of Long Island’s most notorious cold cases — the Gilgo Beach serial killings — is expected to change his plea to guilty at his next scheduled court appearance in April. Sources familiar with the case say 62‑year‑old Rex Heuermann, a Manhattan architect previously charged with seven murders dating back more than 17 years, plans to enter a guilty plea instead of continuing to fight the charges.

Heuermann has been in custody since his arrest in July 2023 and had earlier pleaded not guilty in connection with the deaths of seven women whose remains were discovered over decades along isolated parts of Long Island’s Ocean Parkway and near Gilgo Beach. Prosecutors have linked him to the victims through DNA evidence, cellphone records and items found in searches of his home, and the change of plea could significantly accelerate closure in a case that has haunted the region for years.

Family members of the victims have reportedly been notified of his intention to plead guilty, though any official plea must still be entered before a judge and could be subject to negotiation or change. If accepted, the plea would likely spare the case a lengthy September trial that had been scheduled and may pave the way for formal sentencing in the coming months.
