MADURO set for second US court appearance since abduction

Thursday, March 26, 2026- Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is preparing to appear in a U.S. federal court in Manhattan for a second hearing on Thursday, just weeks after he was seized by U.S. forces and brought to New York to face a sweeping federal indictment.

The hearing follows his dramatic first court appearance earlier this year, where he pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and narco‑terrorism charges and insisted he is still Venezuela’s legitimate leader.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since their capture in early January during a U.S. special forces operation in Caracas.

The couple face long‑standing narcotics and conspiracy charges filed in the Southern District of New York, including allegations of large‑scale cocaine trafficking linked to violent criminal groups. Maduro’s defence team has challenged the legality of his capture and questioned whether Venezuela’s government should be able to fund his legal defence under existing sanctions.

The latest court date comes amid deepening geopolitical tensions and ongoing debate about the U.S. action that removed him from power. Venezuelan political rivals inside the country have continued to consolidate authority in Maduro’s absence, and his legal battle in New York is now a focal point of international scrutiny, with implications for U.S.–Venezuela relations and regional stability.
