Wednesday, March 18, 2026-Joe Kent, the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, has resigned from his role in the Trump administration in protest over the ongoing war with Iran, becoming one of the highest‑ranking officials to step down over the conflict.
Kent announced his resignation on March 17, 2026, saying he could not “in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran,” asserting that Tehran posed no imminent threat to the United States and criticizing the administration’s decision to launch military action.
In his resignation letter, which he shared publicly on social media, Kent directly challenged the justification for the campaign, accusing Israel and its powerful American lobby of influencing the U.S. into the conflict — a claim rejected by the White House.
He urged President Donald Trump to reverse course, arguing that the war served no benefit to the American people and warning against further military escalation.
Kent, a former U.S. Army warrant officer and veteran with significant national security experience, had been confirmed to lead the counterterrorism center in July 2025.
His departure highlights growing dissent within the administration and among some conservative circles over the management and justification of the Iran conflict, underscoring internal debate over U.S. foreign policy priorities.
