Iranian projectiles continue to strike Gulf countries; Tehran says new leader appointed

Tuesday, March 10, 2026-Missile and drone attacks launched from Iran have continued to strike several countries around the Persian Gulf, raising fears that the conflict is expanding across the region. Authorities in nations including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates reported missile or drone activity, with some attacks damaging infrastructure and causing casualties.

Several Gulf states activated air-defense systems to intercept incoming projectiles, while emergency crews responded to fires and structural damage at fuel depots, industrial sites and other facilities. Officials said some missiles and drones were successfully shot down, but others reached targets or caused damage through falling debris. The attacks come as part of Iran’s retaliation following military strikes by the United States and Israel earlier in the conflict.

At the same time, Iranian authorities announced that a new supreme leader has been appointed following the death of longtime leader Ali Khamenei. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has reportedly been selected by the Assembly of Experts to take over the country’s top leadership role, marking a significant and controversial transition during the ongoing war.

The combination of leadership change and continued missile exchanges has heightened concerns about regional stability. Analysts warn that sustained attacks on Gulf countries and energy infrastructure could deepen the conflict and disrupt global oil markets as fighting continues across the Middle East.
