Sunday, March 8, 2026-The race for Texas’s 23rd Congressional District has taken an unusual turn as Brandon Herrera emerges as the Republican nominee. Known online as “The AK Guy,” Herrera built a massive following with firearms-focused videos that have attracted more than four million subscribers.
His rise from internet influencer to political candidate has energized conservative voters but also provided new ammunition for Democrats in a closely watched race.
Democrats believe Herrera’s extensive online history could become a major issue during the campaign. Opponents have already highlighted controversial clips and jokes from his videos, including content referencing Nazi imagery and other offensive themes, which Herrera says were meant as satire.
The resurfacing of these videos has sparked criticism and given Democratic strategists a chance to frame the race around character and judgment rather than traditional party politics.
The political landscape shifted further after Republican incumbent Tony Gonzales dropped out of the race following a scandal involving a former aide, effectively clearing the path for Herrera to become the GOP nominee.
He is now expected to face Democrat Katy Padilla Stout in the general election, and while the district historically leans Republican, the controversy and GOP infighting have given Democrats renewed optimism about competing in West Texas.
