Police assess reports of alleged misconduct after MANDELSON emails published

Wednesday, February  4, 2026-British police are reviewing reports of alleged misconduct in public office after emails attributed to former Labour minister and ex-UK ambassador Lord Peter Mandelson were published as part of the Epstein files. Metropolitan Police commanders have confirmed they received multiple reports and a government referral, and are now assessing whether the allegations meet the criminal threshold for investigation, focusing on whether sensitive government information was improperly shared.

The emails suggest that while Mandelson was Business Secretary in Gordon Brown’s government, he may have forwarded confidential, market-sensitive information to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This material includes documents tied to economic policy decisions during the 2008 financial crisis, raising questions about official conduct and information safeguards.

In response to the controversy, Mandelson resigned from the House of Lords. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned his actions, expressed regret for appointing him as ambassador, and has voiced support for police inquiries. The government has referred material to police and is considering steps to limit Mandelson’s use of his title and roles while the assessment continues.
