Multiple people at state wrestling tournament diagnosed with measles as it spreads in Utah

Monday, February 23, 2026- Health officials in Utah are warning that multiple people who attended last weekend’s state wrestling championships have since been diagnosed with measles, fueling concerns amid a larger outbreak across the state.

The UHSAA 2026 State Wrestling Championships were held Feb. 13‑14 at Utah Valley University in Orem, and participants — especially those unvaccinated — are being urged to monitor for symptoms given the virus’s high contagion. Officials expect more infections to be reported as the incubation period for measles unfolds.

The spread at the tournament underscores how measles is moving beyond isolated cases into broader community transmission. Health authorities have noted new chains of infection tied to high school activities and are stressing that events where students travel and mix can accelerate spread, particularly among people who lack immunization protection. Those exposed could develop symptoms days to weeks after contact, complicating containment efforts.

Utah’s measles situation is part of a wider outbreak in the state that has seen significant case counts this year, with public health officials repeatedly emphasizing the importance of vaccination to curtail transmission and protect vulnerable populations.

Unvaccinated individuals who may have been at the wrestling meet or other recent exposure sites are encouraged to watch closely for signs of measles and seek guidance from healthcare providers.
