MAMDANI pitches TRUMP on housing in latest White House visit

Saturday, February 28, 2026-Zohran Mamdani made an unannounced visit to the White House on Thursday, pitching Donald Trump on a bold federal housing initiative aimed at building more than 12,000 new homes in New York City — potentially the city’s largest housing development in decades.

Mamdani and his team presented a mock front page from the New York Daily News with the headline “Trump to City: Let’s Build,” a symbolic appeal designed to resonate with the president and spotlight the potential impact of a roughly $21 billion federal investment in affordable housing and related infrastructure in Queens.

The tone of the meeting — described by both sides as “productive” — underscored an unexpected working dynamic between two leaders from opposing political camps. Trump, who has previously criticized Mamdani, appeared receptive to the housing proposal and encouraged continued dialogue on addressing the city’s housing shortage.

The Sunnyside Yard project at the center of the pitch includes not only residential units but also parks, schools, and community space, positioning the plan as both an economic and social investment.

Beyond housing, Mamdani also raised immigration concerns during the visit, pressing the president on the detention of a Columbia University student by federal agents. Shortly after the meeting, Trump agreed to the student’s release — an outcome Mamdani publicly emphasized. The dual focus on housing affordability and federal intervention reflects a strategic effort by the mayor to convert access and dialogue into tangible results for New Yorkers.
