X to stop Grok AI from undressing images of real people after backlash

Friday, January 16, 2026-X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, is imposing new restrictions on its AI chatbot Grok to prevent it from generating or editing images that digitally undress real people. The move comes after widespread backlash from users, advocacy groups, and governments over Grok’s ability to produce non-consensual sexualized content.

Under the new rules, Grok will be technically blocked from creating images showing people in revealing clothing, including bikinis or underwear, in regions where such content is illegal. The restrictions apply to all users, including paid subscribers, and some features will be geoblocked to comply with local laws. Authorities and watchdogs have welcomed the move, noting that previous loopholes allowed the creation of harmful imagery.

Critics, however, caution that the standalone Grok app and website may still permit problematic content, highlighting ongoing concerns about AI governance and safety. The controversy underscores the challenges tech platforms face in balancing innovation with protecting individuals from abuse, and it signals a growing global push for stricter safeguards in AI-generated media.
